If you want good skin, you need to take care of your makeup brushes. Take it from someone who doesn’t always have perfect skin.
Question for you. When is the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Please don’t tell me you’ve never done it or that it’s been years. Actually, don’t tell me, I don’t want to know. I’m just going to explain why you should clean your brushes at the very least – every 3 months. Those uncleaned brushes not only contain bacteria but also dead skin and oil. Oy! That’s super yucky! When you continue to use dirty brushes on your face that can lead to clogged pores, dull skin, and acne.
I used to borrow my mom’s makeup brush cleaner because I was too cheap to buy my own. But now that I’m on my own, I needed to figure out a way to clean my brushes inexpensively, or better yet with things I had in my own apartment. So here is my secret kitchen cleaning cure for makeup brushes. You need these six things:
- Olive oil
- Pure-Castile soap (you can get at Target or any supermarket)
- Vinegar
- Water
- Bowl
- Towel
How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
- First step: Spray olive oil on your brush, or dip it into a dish. Do not soak your brush in the olive oil because it’ll be really hard to get the oil out of the brush. So spray or dip and then take your brush and gently rub it on a washcloth to separate the makeup from the brush bristles.
- Mix Pure-Castile soap with water in a bowl. Dip the brush into the bowl, stir it around and run then your fingers through the brush really washing the makeup out of the brush.
- After you think you’ve thoroughly cleaned it, run the brush under the faucet to get the remaining soap and makeup out.
- Dip the brush in vinegar to kill any bacteria.
- Then once again, run the brush under the faucet to get all the vinegar out.
- Then lay the brush on a towel flat to dry.
- Allow the brush to fully dry before using it.
Cleaning your brushes on a regular basis will help keep brushes nice for longer. But more importantly, keeping your brushes clean will lead to healthy skin.
