They’re putting in the effort, no doubt, but there’s MUCH room for improvement. So short answer – no! But let me dive into the important details.
How Uniqlo Started?
Uniqlo was founded in 1949 in Hiroshima, Japan, and in recent years has evolved into a global brand. The company is renowned for its commitment to high-quality, affordable clothing while focusing on simplicity and functionality. Uniqlo aims to offer well-designed, casual wear to a broad demographic.
Uniqlo is a part of the Fast Retailing Group, a Japanese retail holding company. In addition to Uniqlo, the Fast Retailing Group has several other brands including GU, Theory, J Brand and more.
Before we embark on assessing Uniqlo’s sustainability, let’s clarify what sustainability means. Sustainability in fashion means reducing waste, using eco-friendly materials, and prioritizing the well-being of its workers.
Is Uniqlo Fast Fashion?
Yes, Uniqlo is considered fast fashion. Fast fashion is when a brand produces inexpensive, trendy clothing quickly and on a large scale. Fast fashion allows consumers to get their hands on the latest styles at low prices, as they are releasing new items introduced frequently to keep up with rapidly changing fashion trends.
Uniqlo aligns with the principles of fast fashion, as they provide a wide variety of clothing pieces at affordable prices, with new collections introduced regularly.
Uniqlo’s Sustainability Ratings
Outside sources classify Uniqlo’s actions towards sustainability as “It’s a start.” Good on You puts them in this category as they use lower-impact materials and worker’s rights policies. When it comes to their animal welfare policies however they are categorized as “Not Good Enough” due to their use of leather, exotic animal hair, and silk.
The Fashion Transparency Index however rated Uniqlo a 51 out of 100, a much more positive rating compared to what Good on You had to say. Brands in this category are publishing and disclosing most information and providing detailed supplier lists to the public. Brands in this category also address many common issues such as carbon emissions; gender equality; and sourcing.
Has Uniqlo Been Accused of Greenwashing?
It is unsurprising that Uniqlo finds itself on the list of fashion companies accused of greenwashing. With a worldwide network of over 3,000 stores and a product range heavily reliant on inexpensive synthetic materials such as rayon, polyester, nylon, and elastane, the brand’s sustainability reputation has faced questions due to its low-cost production. Uniqlo has taken steps toward sustainability, embracing technologies for recycling materials, investing in energy-efficient infrastructure, and supporting environmental initiatives. The lack of transparency, especially the absence of certifications for their textiles, has led to accusations of greenwashing.
Uniqlo, celebrated for its commitment to affordable, quality clothing, has taken small steps in the effort to be a more eco-conscious and sustainable company. However, it has been made clear they still have a long way to go.
